FG Approves Upgrade Of Delta, Onne, Rivers And Calabar Ports

The Federal Government has approved the comprehensive modernisation and upgrade of four major ports in Nigeria — Delta, Onne, Rivers and Calabar ports.

The approval, announced on September 27, 2026, is part of the Federal Government’s broader plan to modernise Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and strengthen the sector’s contribution to trade, investment, employment and economic growth.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Bolaji Akinola, the latest approval comes in addition to the earlier approval for the modernisation and upgrade of Apapa and Tin Can Island ports in Lagos.

The Federal Government said the upgrades are expected to improve cargo-handling capacity and operational efficiency, reduce vessel turnaround time, strengthen regional connectivity and make the movement of goods more predictable and cost-effective.

The development is being pursued under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with the Federal Government seeking to reposition Nigeria’s maritime sector as a major driver of economic activity.
The statement also noted that the latest approvals complement plans for the development of several new deep seaports across the country.

They include the Ibom Deep Seaport in Akwa Ibom State, Bakassi Deep Seaport in Cross River State, Agge Deep Seaport in Bayelsa State, Gateway Deep Seaport in Ogun State, Ondo Deep Seaport in Ondo State and Bonny Deep Seaport in Rivers State.

The upgrade of the Delta Port is expected to further strengthen the state’s position within Nigeria’s maritime and logistics network, with potential implications for cargo movement, regional trade and port-related economic activities.
