The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has reaffirmed the commitment of the legislature to strengthening the teaching profession and improving the welfare of teachers.

Guwor gave the assurance on Monday in Asaba in his goodwill message to mark the 2026 World Teachers' Day celebration.

The Speaker, who was represented by the Member representing Ndokwa West Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Charles Emetulu, described teachers as "nation-builders, character moulders, mentors, role models and custodians of our collective values”.

According to him, "Before there is a doctor, an engineer, a lawyer, an entrepreneur, a scientist or a public leader, there is a teacher who helped to lay the foundation”.

Guwor noted that teachers across Delta State have continued to carry "the message of knowledge, opportunity and hope" to children in urban, rural and riverine communities, adding that many professionals, academics, public servants and traditional rulers passed through the hands of teachers.

The Speaker said the Assembly recognizes that sustainable progress in education requires sound policies and a strong legal framework, pointing to existing legislative instruments such as the Delta State Universal Basic Education Law, the Delta State Post-Primary Education Law and the Delta State Child Rights Law, 2008 (as amended).

He assured that the 8th Assembly will continue to support legislative measures to strengthen existing frameworks and address emerging challenges in the education sector.

"Where new legislation is required or existing laws need to be strengthened, we will give such initiatives the necessary legislative attention," he said.

The Speaker further pledged that the legislature will continue to collaborate with the executive and other stakeholders to promote quality education, professional development and improved welfare for teachers, in line with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's MORE Agenda.

He commended teachers for their sacrifices, including those who travel long distances, work beyond official hours and offer extra support to pupils facing learning difficulties.

"Let me, on behalf of the Delta State House of Assembly, say to our teachers: We see you. We value you. And we appreciate you," Guwor declared.

The Speaker added that while the work of teachers may not always attract public attention, its impact is reflected in the lives and achievements of their students.

"Every child you inspire is a testimony, every life you transform is a legacy, and every student you prepare for the future is a contribution to the future of Delta State and Nigeria”, Guwor noted.

Reflecting on the 60th anniversary of the global commitment to protecting and advancing the status of teachers, Guwor called on governments and stakeholders to renew their support for the profession.

"If we want a better Delta State, we must invest in our teachers. If we want a better Nigeria, we must respect and support our teachers. And if we want a better future for our children, we must stand with those who prepare them for that future," he stated.

The Speaker congratulated teachers in Delta and across Nigeria on the 2026 World Teachers' Day celebration.
