The Neglect Of The South-South: Another Disservice By The Tinubu Administration

-By Zik Gbemre
The proposed $7 billion seaport project in Ogun State is another major disservice to the South-South region by the Tinubu administration. Instead of spending billions of dollars on a brand-new seaport elsewhere, the Federal Government should prioritize repairing and modernizing the existing ports in the South-South, which would cost far less.
The South-South already has critical maritime facilities like Calabar Port, Warri Port, Sapele Port, Burutu Port, and Okwagbe Port. This region has generated the oil and gas wealth that powers Nigeria’s economy. So why is its infrastructure being left to rot while huge funds are directed elsewhere?
This is not about stopping development in Ogun State or any other region. Every part of Nigeria deserves growth. However, fair and sensible governance requires upgrading existing facilities before pouring billions into expensive new projects.
The same problem applies to the proposed Coastal Highway. Reports suggest the highway may stop short in Edo State and connect to the old East-West Road, depriving the South-South of the full benefits it was promised. Meanwhile, urgent local demands like fixing the runway at Osubi Airport are completely ignored.
This pattern raises painful and serious questions:
* Is President Tinubu acting only as a leader for the Yoruba people, pursuing an Oduduwa agenda at the expense of other regions?
* Are projects being redirected strictly to benefit the territory of the so-called Oduduwa Empire?
* Why is the South-South's oil revenue being used to build new infrastructure elsewhere while its own ports and airports remain neglected?
The South-South cannot remain an afterthought. Its people deserve real investments that create jobs, boost business, and fix basic infrastructure.
As the 2027 presidential election approaches, the people of the South-South must ask hard questions, demand fair treatment, and decide whether an administration that neglects them truly deserves their votes.
