Delta Assembly Resumes Plenary, Speaker Urges Peaceful 2027 Campaigns

The Delta State House of Assembly has resumed plenary after its annual recess, with the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Guwor Emomotimi Dennis, urging politicians and political parties to ensure that the 2027 electioneering season is driven by ideas, competence and service rather than violence and bitterness.

Guwor made the call on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, while welcoming lawmakers back to the Chamber following the 2026 annual recess.

The Speaker expressed gratitude to God for His protection over members and their families during the recess, saying lawmakers had returned refreshed and ready to continue their legislative duties.

He also congratulated the government and people of Delta State on the 35th anniversary of the creation of the state.

Guwor, on behalf of the House, commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the successful hosting of the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit, describing it as a strategic initiative aimed at showcasing the state's investment opportunities and attracting domestic and international investors.

He assured that the House would continue to provide the necessary legislative support to create an enabling environment for investment, enterprise and economic development in the state.

The Speaker also described the expansion of representation in the Delta State House of Assembly from 29 to 38 constituencies ahead of the 2027 elections as a historic development.

According to him, the creation of nine additional constituencies would give more communities direct representation and strengthen democratic participation across the state.

Guwor noted that the resumption of plenary coincided with another important phase in Nigeria's democratic journey, with campaigns for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections having commenced on August 19, while campaigns for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to begin on September 9.

He therefore appealed to political parties, candidates, supporters and the general public to conduct their activities peacefully.

“Let our campaigns be about ideas, programmes, competence, character and service. Election is not a do-or-die affair,” he said.

The Speaker further urged members to apply the knowledge and insights acquired during their leadership training at the London Business School to improve the quality and effectiveness of legislative work.

He charged chairmen and members of House committees to approach the remaining legislative calendar with renewed commitment and ensure that pending bills, motions and petitions were treated expeditiously.
Guwor assured his colleagues that there was substantial legislative work ahead, urging them to remain focused on their constitutional responsibilities as the 8th Delta State House of Assembly enters the final phase of its tenure.

He concluded by formally welcoming lawmakers back to plenary and calling for renewed dedication to the service of Deltans.
