The passing of former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, marks the end of an era defined by leadership characterized by patience, tolerance, and quiet strength. While political leaders often struggle with opposition and public critique, Dr. Uduaghan stood out as a rare, complete gentleman who respected intellectual discourse and firmly rejected political state-sponsored thuggery and sycophancy.

I respected Dr. Uduaghan immensely for two key traits that separated him from many in the political arena. First and foremost, he never viewed his critics as enemies of the state. Unlike his predecessor and younger cousin, Chief James Ibori, Uduaghan welcomed critical feedback. In fact, I criticized his administration more fiercely than almost anyone else, yet he never targeted me or drove me into exile for fear of state-sponsored harassment.

He was a listener who preferred dialogue over confrontation. I still recall him calling me directly after reading my criticisms in national dailies to discuss the issues raised. When my critiques were brought before then-Senate President David Mark, who subsequently reached out to him, Governor Uduaghan did not react with anger,he listened and reflected. He once told me, "Zik, you are an elder statesman; if you observe any wrongdoing, please call me before going public." Even when our relationship grew strained over the construction of the Effurun Roundabout Flyover, a project I criticized openly, he handled it with grace and good humor, jokingly remarking on the day he commissioned the bridge that "there is one man you can never fully please."

Beyond his openness to critique, Uduaghan was a leader of remarkable simplicity and realism. Unlike many of his peers, including his cousin James Ibori, he was never carried away by traditional chieftaincy titles and, to my knowledge, held no traditional chieftaincy title throughout his time in public life. He preferred simplicity over grand titles.

His commitment to practical governance was evident in how he addressed genuine community needs. Though some believed he and I were not on speaking terms, when I drew his attention to the deplorable state of the roads in Ugboroke Layout, he acted swiftly. He called ARC to the site, and the entire Ugboroke Layout streets were tarred alongside proper drainage systems, a lasting testament to his willingness to act on constructive advice.

Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan was a cultured, grounded leader who deeply understood his people. In our phone conversations, he frequently spoke fluently in Urhobo, demonstrating his deep appreciation for the language and culture. He leaves behind a legacy of tolerance, political maturity, and genuine respect for intellectual engagement. Delta State has lost a peaceful leader and a true gentleman.

May his soul rest in peace.
