Request to Rename the Proposed Ughelli East LGA as Ughievwen LGA

Dear Rt. Hon. Rev. Francis Ejiroghene Waive,

I came across the bill you proposed for the creation of Ughelli East Local Government Area, and I sincerely welcome the initiative. The creation of a new Local Government Area in Ughievwen is a welcome development to every Ughievwen person and, if achieved, will bring governance and development closer to our people.

However, I would kindly appeal that the name of the proposed Local Government Area be amended from Ughelli East to Ughievwen Local Government Area.

There are examples within Delta State where Local Government Areas bear the names of the indigenous communities and areas they represent, such as Udu, Uvwie, Okpe and Sapele. It is also important to put the history of their creation in its proper context.

The creation of Local Government Areas under the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida followed the existing administrative divisions. For example, the former Ughelli Local Government was divided into Ughelli North and Ughelli South, reflecting the old Ughelli divisions rather than the names of the indigenous groups within those areas.

Subsequently, under the administration of General Sani Abacha, further Local Government Areas were created, with names reflecting the indigenous communities and identities of the areas concerned, including Udu, Uvwie, Okpe and Sapele.

For this reason, I believe that naming the proposed LGA Ughievwen Local Government Area would properly reflect the identity, history and heritage of the people it is intended to serve. It would also give the new LGA a distinct identity rather than tying its name to the existing Ughelli administrative designation.

I therefore respectfully appeal to you, as our representative, to kindly consider making the necessary amendment to the name of the proposed LGA from Ughelli East to Ughievwen Local Government Area.

The creation of the LGA itself is greatly appreciated, and I believe that getting the name right from the outset will make this historic development even more meaningful to the Ughievwen people.
