Nigerian Bishop Allegedly Killed in South Africa

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has alleged the killing of a 58-year-old Nigerian cleric, Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Fakunle, an indigene of Iye in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was reportedly killed on Friday, September 4, 2026, at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg.

The National President of NICASA, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, who disclosed the incident to newsmen, said the circumstances surrounding the cleric’s death had left his family, friends and members of the Nigerian community devastated.

According to Onyekwelu, two suspects allegedly gained access to Fakunle’s residence and opened fire on him, reportedly shooting him more than seven times.

He described the incident as a horrific and senseless act of violence, while condemning the killing and expressing concern over the continued loss of Nigerian lives to violent crime in South Africa.

Onyekwelu said NICASA had reported the incident to the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, adding that a murder case had been opened at the Jeppe Police Station.

He called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and bring those responsible to justice.

The association also expressed concern over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa and urged relevant authorities to strengthen measures to protect members of the Nigerian community.
