‎The recent "Warri Unity Game" organized by the Olu of Itsekiri at Federal Government College, Warri, presents a classic case of symbolic gestures masking structural reality. While sports tournaments make for photogenic headlines, peace cannot be manufactured through photo opportunities while fundamental grievances regarding land ownership, chieftaincy titles, and administrative equity remain unaddressed.

‎Hostile Geography: The Dilemma at FGC Warri.
‎A critical flaw in the execution of the Unity Game lies in its venue and host dynamics. Federal Government College, Warri, sits within territory historically and traditionally recognized under the authority of the Agbarha-Warri Kingdom (Okurode-Urhobo/Ogunu).

‎By acting as the primary host on land situated within Agbarha-Warri domain, while His Majesty Kingsley Emakpo Orere, the Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom, was relegated to the status of a guest, the event inverted traditional norms. For genuine reconciliation to occur, respect for territorial boundaries must precede collective celebration. When traditional hosting roles are misaligned with land jurisdiction, the exercise ceases to be an act of unity and becomes an assertion of dominance.

‎The Real Path to Peace: Recommendations of Past Commissions.
‎Peace in Warri will not be secured through novelty cups or ceremonial jamborees; it requires the political will to implement the structural solutions already documented by various commissions of inquiry:

‎1. Administrative Decoupling (Separate LGAs): The three major ethnic groups of Warri: the Urhobo, Itsekiri, and Ijaw require distinct Local Government Areas. Equitable administrative boundaries will remove the friction of resource distribution and political disenfranchisement that fuels local conflict.
‎2. Nomenclature and Title Clarity: Adjusting the primary traditional title to Olu of Itsekiri flects historical accuracy and respects the autonomous co-existence of neighboring Urhobo and Ijaw monarchies within the broader Warri metropolis.
‎Rooted Identity vs. Urban Pretense:
‎A fundamental strength of Urhobo heritage lies in an unwavering connection to ancestral homelands. Across Delta State, prominent figures and families consistently invest in and identify with their specific native towns rather than subsuming their identity under a generic urban umbrella:

‎True development happens from the grass roots up. Rather than focusing solely on urban centers claiming jurisdiction over land held by Urhobo communities, leadership of Itsekiri side must encourage Itsekiri people in returning to ancestral roots such as the historic settlements along the Benin River to build houses, invest, and develop lasting infrastructure.
‎
‎Until the underlying issues of land rights, administrative autonomy, and historical accuracy are directly addressed, public relations events like the Warri Unity Game will remain superficial overlays on an unresolved crisis.
