The National President of the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG), Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, has received an Award of Excellence as Southern Nigeria’s Most Courageous and Bold Media Editor for his contributions to press freedom, ethical journalism and good governance.

The award was presented by the Unifiers Movement for Good Governance at a ceremony held at the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The organisation’s chairman, Dr. Rufus Omoregbe, JP, who presided over the event, commended Otiti for his courageous editorial leadership and commitment to promoting truth, accountability and responsible public advocacy through digital journalism.

The organisers explained that the honour recognises Otiti’s consistent efforts to defend the public interest, uphold professional journalistic standards and strengthen democratic values across Southern Nigeria and beyond.

They stressed that responsible journalism remains a vital instrument for promoting transparency, holding public institutions accountable and deepening democratic governance, particularly as digital media continues to expand its influence on public discourse.

Receiving the award, Otiti expressed gratitude to the Unifiers Movement for Good Governance, describing the recognition as a renewed call to uphold the ethics, integrity and responsibilities of the journalism profession.

He dedicated the award to members of GOMEP-NG and other media professionals who continue to promote credible, balanced and responsible reporting despite the numerous challenges facing the industry.

Otiti's recognition also underscores the growing importance of online media practitioners in shaping public opinion, advancing accountability and providing citizens with reliable information to participate meaningfully in democratic processes.

The ceremony attracted community leaders, civil society advocates, media practitioners and other distinguished guests, who applauded the organisation for recognising individuals whose professional contributions promote nation-building and good governance.

The award further reinforces the importance of media leadership anchored on professional integrity, public-interest reporting and accountability as essential pillars of Nigeria's democratic development.
