AMORI RECEIVES WIDOWS SUPPORT GROUP, COMMENDS WELFARE INITIATIVE

The Chief Adviser to the Governor of Delta State, Senator (Chief) Dr. Ighoyota Amori, has received the Widows Support Group led by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Social Investment Programmes and State Coordinator of the Delta State Widows Welfare Scheme, Dr. Isioma Okonta, during a familiarisation visit to his office in Asaba.

The visit, which took place on today Wednesday, was aimed at introducing the newly formed Widows Support Group to the Chief Adviser and informing him of its activities and plans ahead of the forthcoming political season.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Okonta said the group was established to mobilise widows across Delta State who, according to him, had benefited from or identified with the State Government’s interventions under the Widows Welfare Scheme.

He explained that while the existing scheme has enrolled 10,000 widows, the office maintains a wider database of more than 60,000 widows across the 25 local government areas of the state.

Okonta said the group was intended to provide a platform through which widows could collectively engage in activities and express their interest in the continuity of government programmes that have impacted their lives.

He noted that the Widows Welfare Scheme had provided monthly financial support and healthcare-related interventions for beneficiaries. Public reports on the scheme have also documented the State Government’s enrolment of widows in the contributory health insurance programme.

According to him, members of the group had been engaging with widows across the state and were interested in supporting the continuity of the programmes under the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Dr. Okonta also formally invited the Chief Adviser to the inauguration of the Widows Support Group scheduled for Monday, September 28, 2026, at the Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu Foundation Campaign Secretariat Hall, Asaba, at 11:00 a.m.

Responding, Senator Amori commended the group for identifying with the welfare of widows and acknowledged the significance of sustained government attention to vulnerable members of society.

The Chief Adviser recalled his longstanding interactions with widows in his political constituency and said he had observed the appreciation and interest generated among beneficiaries by government interventions targeted at them.

He commended Dr. Okonta and his team for expanding their engagement beyond the beneficiaries already captured under the existing programme, describing the effort to organise widows across the 25 local government areas as significant.

Senator Amori said the welfare of widows should remain a continuous concern, stressing that government interventions designed to support vulnerable citizens should be sustained and improved.

He particularly commended Governor Oborevwori for continuing the Widows Welfare Scheme and expressed hope that further improvements would be made to the programme.

“Not just because of the relationship or fellowship, this programme is worth doing and should be encouraged,” Senator Amori said, stressing the importance of ensuring that widows feel that government cares about their welfare.

He also encouraged the group to continue taking its message to communities across the state and making widows aware of programmes designed to support them.

Senator Amori assured the delegation of his presence at the inauguration on Monday, subject to his schedule, and thanked the group for the invitation and for its commitment to the welfare of widows.

The Delta State Widows Welfare Scheme was introduced by Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the governor of Delta state; as part of the state’s social investment interventions for vulnerable citizens. Available public records show that the scheme was designed to provide financial and healthcare support to eligible widows across the state.
